Current Job Opening: ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANT
Summary:
The ECM is seeking a warm, welcoming, and self-directed individual to provide administrative support to the Executive Director. This is a highly public-facing role and a key part of the daily life of the ECM Community Center. The person in this position is often the first point of contact for students, neighbors, renters, donors, and visitors, and helps ensure that the building, programs, and shared spaces run smoothly.
About the ECM
The ECM is a justice-rooted, relationship-centered space in Lawrence that brings together students, neighbors, organizers, artists, and faith communities. Our work is grounded in mutual care, shared responsibility, and showing up for one another — through meals, events, organizing, and daily interactions. We are a small staff working in a lively, fast-moving environment, and we value flexibility, kindness, and a willingness to pitch in where needed.
Key Responsibilities
Responding to emails and phone calls
Maintaining internal and public-facing calendars
Sending rental agreements and invoices
Collecting, logging, and tracking payments
Handling deposit reimbursements
Giving tours of the building and answering questions about space and equipment use
Supporting donor correspondence
Event planning and on-site support in coordination with the ECM Board
Maintaining and organizing the Solidarity Library
Completing additional tasks as assigned by the Executive Director
What We’re Looking For
Someone who is warm, welcoming, and comfortable engaging with a wide range of people
Strong communication skills and responsiveness with staff, board members, and partners
Ability to work independently, follow tasks through to completion, and manage time effectively
Comfort working in a dynamic environment that can at times be busy, high-demand, and overwhelming
Flexibility and the ability to shift quickly between tasks and respond to visitor needs as they arise
Reliability in checking email, being available by phone, and being present in the building during scheduled work hours
Ability to work collaboratively as part of a small staff team
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent
1-2 years of experience in nonprofit or related work
Experience with social media management, newsletter software, and/or graphic design
Experience with event planning and promotion
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Strong organizational and time management skills
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends
Workplace & Accessibility Note
The ECM Community Center is a three-story building constructed in 1960 and does not have an elevator. This position requires regular movement throughout the building, including use of stairs, and extended time on-site.
